I have been thinking lately of the  issue of two women travelling for the sake of an abortion that wasn’t available in Ireland. And this is the conclusion I have come to: Abortion can be a many headed beast if you wish to overly complicate things. Pro-life v. No life, person, child, baby, foetus, sac of cells, things etc but the bottom line is if you are a woman you have a choice  to make: either you will carry to fruition or you won’t.

What then helps you decide?

And this is when you have the infamous rub of morality against reality. Abortions happen- sex happens- even if you don’t necessarily wish it to be so. Love happens – rape happens. Changing your mind happens. Why should Abortion happen? Because it is, in some instances, a needed thing. When should Abortion not happen? When it is against a woman’s will. And yet miscarriage happens.

Abortion, in my mind, is one of those issues that highlights our degree of humanity to others. As much as you may disagree the choice to have an abortion should ultimately rest with the female.

And yet, I met a woman to whom it didn’t and she was destroyed in that decision. It reminds me of the truth- someone always gets hurt. Either the person receiving the truth or the truth messenger.

Tying the issue of Abortion to pro-life: God and the sacredness of life only muddies the water unnecessary. You cannot force the belief of God on another. And without a belief in God why would you uphold a law that states no abortion under no circumstances?

The fact is that from the dawn of time abortions have been happening  and will never be stopped from happening. Take the issue out of the dark and shine a light on it. The most important thing is to be non judgmental on another and their issue of why they need it.

Society will never be able to rightly guess the outcome of the action of abortion. Was it the right or wrong thing to do? Did it help the woman in her circumstances? Is there a God or isn’t there one? Is life truly sacred or are we all just a number?

The only person who can say whether it is the right thing or not is the woman herself. And if she does not know the truth of  ‘know thyself’ she will inevitable be hurt by the outcome of her decision.

Abortion was an option I looked at myself but knew deep in myself I could not carry through and instead took the option of a fifth C -section. Yes, five C- sections. Pain with a captial P – I know all about it.

Physical pain comes and goes but mental anguish you can spend a life time fighting.

God bless any woman facing that decision.
